Note to Twelfth Night 2.4.70-71, "pleasure will be paid, one time or another"

The obvious meaning of this is that we all have to pay the penalty for our pleasures, as, for example, we pay for a night of drinking with a hangover the next morning. However, the Clown, in his foolish/wise way, may have another meaning or two in mind. He may mean that pleasure, like nourishment, is a necessity, and that sometime or another we have to pay the debt to pleasure. This would mean that Orsino can't wallow in his self-pity forever. Or the Clown may mean that Orsino's pleasure in his self-pity will cost him; no woman is going to fall for a man whose way of being in love is to lounge around listening to melancholy songs.
