Note to Much Ado About Nothing, 1.3.33: "enfranchis'd with a clog"

Return
to
Much Ado About Nothing,
Act 1, Scene 3, line 33.
enfranchis'd with a clog: allowed freedom as a hobbled horse is allowed freedom. —A clog is a heavy wooden block attached to a leg to keep a horse or a prisoner from moving very far or fast. These statements by Don John imply that Don Pedro has imposed restrictions on him, but we never learn what they might be.
