Note to Hamlet, 1.2.opening stage direction: "HAMLET [dressed all in black]"
Hamlet is dressed in black, but no one else is. This creates a striking visual and dramatic effect. The new king intends to make everyone feel comfortable with his marriage to his brother's queen, show his competence to deal with the threat from Fortinbras, and demonstrate that he will deal kindly with those who support him. However, Hamlet, just by wearing black and saying nothing, shows his opposition to every word that the king says.
