Note to Romeo and Juliet, 1.5.97: "Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much:"

Return
to
Romeo and Juliet,
Act 1, Scene 5, line 97.
Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much: you are speaking too harshly of your hand. With these words, Juliet sends a mixed message: (1) your hand isn't all that rough, and I might even like it OR (2) since your hand isn't rough, there's no need to kiss my hand. Good pilgrim: Pilgrims who journeyed to the Holy Land brought back palm fronds, so they were called "palmers."
"palm to palm is holy palmer's kiss"
